I'll be honest - I was skeptical about ao LAKESIDE CAFE at first. When a place blows up on TikTok and Instagram like this one did after opening in summer 2024, you wonder if it's all style over substance. But after spending a morning here overlooking Lake Aoki, I can say the hype is deserved.

The drive from Hakuba takes about 20 minutes, winding through the countryside toward Omachi. When you first spot that blue wooden building sitting right on the lakeshore with the Northern Alps rising behind it, you understand immediately why this place has become such a social media sensation.

The Setting is Everything

What sets ao LAKESIDE CAFE apart isn't just the food - it's the location. They've got around 50 terrace seats positioned right by the water, and every single one offers postcard-perfect views across Lake Aoki to the mountain peaks beyond.

I visited on a crisp winter morning, and watching the mist rise off the lake while snow-capped peaks reflected in the water... well, it's the kind of scene that makes you temporarily forget you have anywhere else to be. The outdoor heaters keep things comfortable even in cooler weather.

The Food Actually Delivers

What to Expect

Fair warning: this place gets busy, especially on weekends. The Instagram fame means you might wait for a table, particularly if you want one of those coveted lakeside terrace spots. I'd recommend arriving early - they open at 8 AM, which is perfect for a peaceful breakfast with incredible views.

The service is friendly but can be a bit slow when they're slammed. Just factor that into your plans and use it as an excuse to linger longer over that scenery.

Should You Make the Trip?

Absolutely. Yes, it's a bit of a drive from central Hakuba, and yes, you'll pay tourist prices for the privilege. But honestly? Sitting on that terrace with a good hamburger, watching the light change on Lake Aoki and the surrounding peaks... it's one of those experiences that justifies the hype.
